What Is MCM Flexible Stone Made Of?
MCM is a mineral-based composite. The formulation contains no organic polymer binder, which is the single most important fact about the material — it is why MCM reaches a Class A fire rating while many competing “soft stone” products do not.
The three constituent groups are:
- Natural stone powder — ground marble, granite and quartz. This carries the colour, grain and surface character. Because the powder is real stone, the finished panel reads as stone rather than as a printed imitation.
- Cementitious minerals — the inorganic binder matrix that holds the sheet together and gives it tensile strength.
- Inorganic pigments — iron oxide, titanium dioxide and similar mineral colourants. Unlike organic dyes, these do not fade meaningfully under UV exposure and do not contribute to combustion.
Every ingredient is inorganic and non-combustible. Stone and clay minerals have already been through geological heat; they do not burn. When exposed to fire, MCM’s mineral matrix stays stable rather than releasing heat energy through combustion.
How MCM Flexible Stone Is Manufactured
The production route is what separates MCM from both ceramics and polymer panels.
Traditional ceramic tile is fired above 1000 °C, which vitrifies the body into a rigid, brittle slab. MCM is cured at a far lower temperature — typically 200–400 °C. That is hot enough to activate the mineral binders but low enough to avoid vitrification, so the sheet stays flexible.
The practical consequences of low-temperature curing are significant. Energy consumption and CO₂ emissions are substantially lower than fired clay or ceramic production. More importantly for installation, the finished sheet bends around curves and columns instead of cracking.
This is also the point where MCM differs from polymer-bound flexible panels. Some products marketed as “flexible stone” use polyurethane, epoxy or acrylic resins as the binder. Those resins are combustible, so those products typically reach only B or C fire classifications. MCM uses mineral modification technology instead, which is how it achieves A2-s1, d0 rather than settling for B1.

Natural stone wins outright on fire classification — A1, fully non-combustible — but at 30–40 kg/m² it demands structural capacity that retrofit and high-rise projects frequently do not have. Ceramic tile is equally rigid and heavy, and cannot wrap a curve. ACP is light and can achieve good flatness, but polyethylene-core variants remain a serious fire risk; post-Grenfell regulations across Europe, the Middle East and much of Asia now restrict them on tall buildings.

Where MCM Flexible Stone Is Used
The material is specified across four broad application groups.
Exterior facades and high-rise cladding
This is the largest use case. Post-Grenfell building regulations in many jurisdictions require non-combustible cladding above certain heights — commonly 18 m in the UK, 22 m under Germany’s Hochhausrichtlinie, with A2 or better for high-rise and public-access buildings across the Gulf. Interior feature walls, retail and hospitality
Hotels, restaurants and retail fit-outs use MCM where a stone feature wall would otherwise be structurally impractical or prohibitively slow to install. Because the material bonds over existing substrates, refits frequently avoid demolition entirely. See flexible stone for hotel facades.
Curved walls and columns

Renovation and retrofit
Applying directly over sound existing tile is often the deciding factor. It removes demolition, disposal and substrate repair from the critical path — which in occupied buildings (hospitals, schools, operating retail) can matter more than material cost.
Fire Rating and Building Code Compliance
MCM flexible stone has been tested under three major classification systems:
- EN 13501-1 (Europe) — A2-s1, d0. Limited combustible contribution, minimal smoke production, no flaming droplets. Mandatory for CE marking under the Construction Products Regulation.
- ASTM E84 (United States) — Class A, with flame spread index well below 25. This qualifies the material for the most demanding interior locations including exit stairways and corridors.
- GB 8624 (China) — A2 grade, equivalent to the European classification.

One caveat worth stating plainly: a fire rating belongs to the system, not just the panel. Adhesive selection matters — use polymer-modified cementitious adhesives tested with the panels. Joints wider than 3 mm should be filled to prevent flame penetration, and the substrate itself must meet the required classification.
Installation Basics
MCM installs with conventional tiling tooling, which is a large part of its appeal to contractors:
- Substrate check. Concrete, cement board, drywall or existing tile must be structurally sound, clean and level.
- Adhesive. Polymer-modified cementitious adhesive, trowelled to the manufacturer’s specification.
- Cutting. Sheets cut with standard tile tools or a fine blade; no wet saw required for most work.
- Setting. Panels are butted tightly; gaps over 3 mm get fire-rated joint compound.
- Finishing. Transitions, penetrations and wall-to-ceiling junctions need particular attention — these are the usual weak points in any fire-rated assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is MCM flexible stone the same as soft ceramic or soft porcelain?
The terms are used loosely across the market. “Soft ceramic” and “soft porcelain” usually describe a related family of mineral-based flexible finishes, but composition and fire performance vary considerably between manufacturers. Always ask for the test certificate rather than relying on the category name.
Can it be used outdoors?
Yes. MCM is UV-stable because its colourants are inorganic mineral oxides rather than organic dyes, and it performs across freeze-thaw cycles. As with any cladding, the substrate and adhesive must be rated for exterior exposure.
How long does it last?
