Materials

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is the single most important factor for successful MCM installation. The substrate must be: Clean (free from dust, oil, grease, loose particles); Dry (moisture below 5%, new concrete cured 28+ days); Level (deviation ≤ 3 mm over 2 m); Structurally Sound (no cracks, spalling, or delamination); and Primed with the appropriate primer for your substrate type.

Step 2: Layout Planning

1. Establish reference lines using a laser level or chalk line, starting from the most visible corner.
2. Dry-lay panels on the floor to mix colors and textures for the most natural appearance.
3. Plan cuts around windows, doors, corners, and edges — place cut edges in less visible areas.
4. Stagger vertical joints by at least 150 mm to avoid continuous seam lines.
5. Allow panels to acclimate to the installation environment for 24–48 hours.

Step 3: Adhesive Mixing & Application

Mix adhesive following manufacturer specifications precisely — too much water weakens the bond. Use a mixing paddle at low speed (300–400 RPM), mix 3–5 minutes to a smooth consistency, allow 5–10 minutes slaking, then briefly remix. Only mix what can be used within the pot life (typically 2–4 hours).

Apply a thin “key coat” to the substrate with the flat trowel side, then immediately comb with the notched side at 45–60°. Work in 1–2 m² sections to prevent the adhesive from skinning over. For exterior or wet areas, also back-butter panels to ensure 95%+ coverage.

Step 4: Panel Placement

1. Position the panel carefully from your reference line and press firmly into the adhesive bed.
2. Tap evenly across the entire surface with a rubber mallet or flat trowel — firm, even pressure.
3. Check alignment immediately with a spirit level (5–10 minute adjustment window).
4. Periodically lift a corner to verify adhesive coverage (minimum 80% interior, 95% exterior).
5. Clean any squeeze-out immediately with a damp sponge.

Step 5: Cutting MCM Panels

• Straight Cuts: Score the face with a utility knife along a straight edge, then bend away from the score line for a clean snap.
• Curved Cuts: Trace the template, then cut with heavy-duty scissors — MCM’s flexibility allows complex shapes.
• Notches & Cutouts: Use a utility knife for initial cuts, fine-tune with scissors. A hole saw creates clean circular openings.
• Edge Finishing: Lightly sand cut edges with 180–220 grit sandpaper.

Step 6: Joint Treatment

Seamless (Butt-Joint): Panels are butted tightly for a monolithic stone appearance — ideal for interior feature walls. Grouted Joint: Uniform 2–3 mm gaps filled with color-matched flexible grout — recommended for exterior facades and areas with temperature fluctuations.

Step 7: Sealing (Exterior & Wet Areas)

Curved Walls & Columns

For radii greater than 500 mm, standard panels can be applied directly. For tighter radii (200–500 mm), pre-bend panels by gently flexing before installation. For radii below 200 mm, cut panels into 150–200 mm strips.

External Corners

Use either the Wrap Method (miter-cut the backing at 45° and bend around the corner) or the Butt Method (panels meet at the corner with trim profile or sealant).

Over-Cladding Existing Surfaces

MCM can be installed directly over existing tile, brick, render, or concrete — provided the surface is sound, clean, and well-bonded. This makes MCM excellent for renovation projects where removing existing cladding is impractical.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Skipping Primer: The #1 cause of adhesion failure. Always prime according to manufacturer recommendations.
2. Insufficient Adhesive Coverage: Air pockets behind panels lead to debonding, especially in freeze-thaw climates.
