Ever wondered how a sheet of flexible stone that bends, wraps around columns, and looks like natural granite is actually made? In this article, we take you inside the TooFlexi manufacturing facility in Guangxi, China, to show you the complete MCM flexible stone production process — from raw mineral powders to finished panels ready for global shipment.
What Is MCM Flexible Stone Made Of?
MCM (Modified Clay Material) flexible stone is composed of:
- Natural mineral powders (60-70%): Clay, quartz powder, mica, calcium carbonate — sourced from mineral-rich regions of Guangxi
- Polymer modifiers (15-20%): Acrylic and polymer resins that provide flexibility and water resistance
- Natural pigments (5-10%): Iron oxide, chromium oxide, and other mineral-based colorants
- Functional additives (3-5%): UV stabilizers, flame retardants, and coupling agents
The result is a material that contains over 60% natural minerals but bends like leather and weighs 80% less than natural stone.

The 7-Step Manufacturing Process
Step 1: Raw Material Preparation
Natural mineral ores are mined, crushed, and ground to particle sizes ranging from 0.01mm to 2mm. Different particle sizes create different textures — fine powders for smooth finishes, coarser grains for rough stone textures. Each batch is laboratory-tested for purity, moisture content, and mineral composition.
Step 2: Formulation & Mixing
The mineral powders, polymer modifiers, pigments, and additives are precision-weighed and mixed in high-speed dispersers. The formulation varies by product series:
- Rock Series: Coarse mineral grains for authentic rough stone texture
- Line Series: Fine powders with linear extrusion dies for modern linear patterns
- Bionic Series: Multi-layer formulation for organic, wood-like textures
- High-End Series: Premium mineral blends with metallic and pearl pigments
Step 3: Extrusion & Forming
The mixed material is fed into an extruder and formed into thin sheets (2-3mm) on a continuous production line. The extrusion temperature (120-180°C) and pressure are precisely controlled to activate the polymer modifiers and bond the mineral particles. The sheet is then pressed against textured rollers that imprint the natural stone pattern.
Step 4: Surface Treatment
The formed sheet receives surface treatments that enhance durability and aesthetics:
- UV coating: A clear UV-cured topcoat that protects against fading and staining
- Color layering: Multi-color printing for complex stone patterns (marble veining, granite speckling)
- Texture embossing: Pressing with natural stone molds for authentic tactile texture
Step 5: Curing
The panels are cured in temperature-controlled chambers for 24-48 hours. This cross-links the polymer matrix, giving the panels their final strength, flexibility, and dimensional stability. The curing process is critical — undercured panels may be too soft; overcured panels become brittle.
Step 6: Cutting & Quality Inspection
Cured panels are cut to standard sizes (typically 600×600mm, 600×1200mm, or custom sizes). Every panel is inspected for:
- Color consistency against master standards
- Surface defects (bubbles, scratches, color spots)
- Thickness uniformity (±0.2mm tolerance)
- Flexibility test (must bend to 200mm radius without cracking)
- Dimensional accuracy
Panels that don’t pass inspection are recycled — the material can be reground and re-extruded, producing zero waste.
Step 7: Packaging & Shipping
Panels are stacked flat on pallets with protective corners, wrapped in shrink film, and packed in export-grade cartons. Each package includes:
- Product label with series code, color code, and batch number
- Quantity and square footage
- Production date and inspector ID
- Handling and storage instructions
Packages are loaded into containers for sea freight to our global customers.
Quality Control at Every Stage
TooFlexi operates under ISO 9001:2015 quality management. Our QC process includes:
- Incoming raw material testing (purity, moisture, particle size)
- In-process checks every 2 hours (temperature, pressure, thickness)
- Pre-shipment batch testing (fire rating, flexibility, color fastness)
- Third-party verification (SGS, Intertek) for export orders

Sustainability in Manufacturing
TooFlexi’s production process is designed for minimal environmental impact:
- Low energy consumption: Extrusion at 120-180°C (vs. 1200°C+ for ceramic kilns)
- Water recycling: 90% of process water is reused
- Zero waste: Offcuts and rejects are reground and re-extruded
- Low VOC: Finished panels emit zero volatile organic compounds
- Natural minerals: No toxic additives or heavy metals
